White Rock is a city in British Columbia, Canada. The city of Surrey surrounds it on 3 sides as well as Semiahmoo Bay.

The Semiahmoo First Nation reside on the southern end of the city.

There are areas commonly mistaken as being associated with White Rock:

  • Ocean Park
  • Crescent Beach

Brief History

The first question people seem to ask is what’s up with the city’s name. White Rock is named for a distinctive large white boulder on its beach.

More particularly it is a glacial erratic that migrated south during the last glaciation.

It is estimated to weight around 486-ton and strangely enough it kept it’s white colour from shellfish-eating seabirds whose excrement covered the rock, to the point that sailors from the nineteenth century used it as a beacon.

However, it is now kept white through monthly applications of white paint by the city parks department, and has been a popular graffiti target for over thirty years.

The pier and promenade are popular destinations, but do not allow dogs, bicycles or skateboards.

These areas are very busy during the warmer summer months, especially when it comes to line-ups for gelato or fish and chips.

The Straits Salish aboriginal people dominated the region from Boundary Bay in the north to Birch Bay in the south (the US side).

Semiahmoo First Nation permanent encampments were known to exist between 1791 and the 1850’s.

It was in the 1850’s that white settlement began.

These Semiahmoo encampments were located along the waterfront at the eastern and western limits of White Rock.

In 1857 the International Boundary Survey Commission began to set the boundary between the United States and British North America. It fell approximately somewhere along the 49th parallel.

You can see this today as it separates Semiahmoo Bay and Boundary Bay to Point Roberts, Washington, United States.
